As Y Suites is one of the leading university accommodations in Australia, we want everyone to get the most from their time living here. Hence, our community programme, Y Community Experience Programme (Y-CEP), has a range of activities focusing on health, culture, community, academic support, and personal development. Our student housing programmes are designed to introduce students to each other, support academic achievement and well-being, as well as help everyone navigate through the city.
Moving to a foreign country on your own brings a torrent of new experiences and emotions – most of them being positive and exciting ones. However, this package of excitement makes room for less joyful feelings with time. Being away from home and your loved ones can bring about loneliness, stress, and homesickness.
As a student living overseas on your own, your mental and physical well-being should always be your top priority. A thing that could be contributing to your homesickness could sometimes be missing old routines, and the best way to get over it is to create new ones that you will enjoy. For instance, you could visit the same cafe for breakfast every week, establish a new bedtime routine, or discover fun ways to stay fit. Some student apartments in Australia, like Y Suites, come with an in-house gym and a yoga studio for you to clock in a workout.
Decorating your room and personalising your space can also help in easing homesickness. It helps make your room feel more like a homely haven instead of a foreign place that triggers feelings of isolation.
Furthermore, when you settle into your new city, try to make an effort to meet new people around your school or even at your student accommodations to help you get settled in. This is where our Y-CEP initiative comes into play! There is always something happening here at Y Suites, with our packed programme and fun events allowing you to make friends and get to know the city.
Coupled with our amazing student housing facilities in Australia, we make sure that no one is left behind to face loneliness on their own.
With the ongoing pandemic, things are certainly very different at the moment, but rest assured, we are working hard to make sure that you can still make new connections in Australia and be involved in our student apartments’ communities. We have weekly events planned, and the programme mix aligns with the Y-CEP pillars.
For current Y Suites students, we facilitate career workshops to provide real-world professional insights to increase your chances of employment upon graduation. For instance, in April, Y Suites at Waymouth conducted a “How To Ace Your Interview” workshop to provide students with tips to enhance their likelihood of succeeding in the interview.
If you are interested in finding out more about our career workshops, then be sure to register for them and make the most out of your stay at our student accommodation!
Living on your own in a foreign country can sometimes be intimidating.
The good news is that you don’t have to go through this alone at Y Suites. Our Y-CEP programme provides you with opportunities to socialise and meet new people living within the same university housing as you.
We held multiple community bonding events such as Bubble Tea Day to kickstart the month on a sweet yet refreshing note in April. We know how uncomfortable watching a movie alone in the theatre can be. We had a movie night out at Palace Nova to catch the newly released Fantastic Beasts movie. We also held a Dinner N’ Chat session for residents to catch up on their day.
At Y Suites, we provide mental health support for our residents. Our Customer Service Managers are always ready to lend a listening ear and helping hand if you face anxiety or stress in your daily life. Apart from this, we also conduct mindfulness workshops regularly. In April, our student accommodation in Adelaide carried out a Wellbeing Workshop on Self-Care for residents. The workshop provided everyone with a safe space to understand what they can do to mitigate stress and anxiety.
If you are looking for something different to do on the weekends, then lucky you! Besides helping you navigate through the city, Y-CEP also conducts regular city tours to help you get settled in better. April saw Y Suites residents tour Adelaide Central Market, one of the largest undercover fresh produce markets in the Southern Hemisphere. Residents who signed up got to visit the thriving food hub and immerse themselves in the bustling life of the market whilst finding out the season’s freshest produce!
Alternatively, if you like exploring the city on your own, you can always chat with our Customer Service Managers for fun things to do in Adelaide or Melbourne.
